Collection Defense LAB (Legal Aid Bureau) is an effort by several volunteer attorneys, law students, and concerned citizens to improve access to justice for low income consumers experiencing problems with debt collection. LAB grew out of a non-profit organization established in 2013 in Chicago, Illinois that connects low income consumers with attorneys willing to defend, on a pro bono basis, debt collection lawsuits by third-party debt collectors known as “debt buyers.”
We are presently working with attorneys in other states to set up similar clinics and to help low-income consumers find access to existing legal aid organizations in those states. We also hope to connect consumers with resources to help them represent themselves where there are no legal aid resources available. Many state bar associations offer such resources and LAB aims to help consumers find them.
If you are interested in more information about debt buyers, we highly recommend the book Bad Paper: Chasing Debt from Wall Street to the Underworld by Jake Halpern. It’s an entertaining read, and gives a good overview of the debt buying industry.
